Ms. Anita Anand, an Indian origin person and a citizen of Canada became the Defence Minister of Canada.
On the 26th of October, Mr. Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, reshuffled his Cabinet and appointed Ms. Anita Anand as the new Defence Minister of the Country.
Ms. Anita Anand replaced Mr. Harjit Sajjan, an Indian Origin and former Defence Minister of Canada. After being appointed as the Defence Minister of Canada, Ms. Anita Anand took to her Twitter handle and expressed gratitude. She said, “It is my sincere honour to be sworn in today as Minister of National Defence. Thank you @JustinTrudeau for entrusting me with this portfolio.”
While Ms. Anita Anand has been given the Defence Ministry portfolio, Mr. Harjit Sajjan has been appointed as the Minister of the International Development Agency of Canada. The new reshuffled Cabinet ministry of Canada has 38 members, including 50 % women ministers.
The major reason to appoint Ms. Anita Anand as the Defence Minister is to send a strong message to victims and survivors of sexual misconduct, a priority of the Canadian Government Canada is a country which is serious about the implementation of major reforms, especially in assault and sexual harassment cases.
The Canadian Government is facing a crisis in handling sexual assault cases including allegations of sexual misconduct on the part of the former Defence Minister Mr. Harjit Sajjan. Since then, there has been pressure on the Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Justin Trudeau, to appoint a Defence Minister, who could bring back the public’s trust in the Government, especially after the recent military sexual misconduct crisis.
The Canadian military is facing intense public and political pressure to change its culture and create better systems for both preventing and handling sexual misconduct allegations, it said.
Highlighting achievements of Ms. Anita Anand, she has worked as a corporate lawyer and has worked extensively on corporate governance. She started her political journey as a rookie Member of Parliament in 2019 representing Oakville in the Ontario province. She served as procurement minister throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
