Indian-born British Author Mr. Salman Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and abdomen at a literary event in New York, the United States of America (U.S.)
On the evening of the 12th of August, the incident caused panic in New York. Speaking of Mr. Salman Rushdie’s health condition, after the attack, the 75-year-old author is on a ventilator and could lose an eye. Mr. Salman Rushdie’s agent Mr. Andrew Wylie, said that he suffered severed nerves in an arm and damage to his liver, and could lose an eye. Andrew Wylie, his agent, wrote in an email. “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed, and his liver was stabbed and damaged.”
Meanwhile, the New York State Police identified his attacker as Hadi Matar, 24 years old, from New Jersey. However, the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
It is to be noted, that Mr. Salman Rushdie came into the spotlight with his second novel Midnight’s Children published in 1981, which won international praise and the prestigious Booker Prize. Mr. Rushdie was living in the United States of America, an Indian-born British citizen who has faced threats for decades over his 1988 book, The Satanic Verses. The novel was considered by some Muslim clerics as disrespectful to the Prophet Mohammed and was targeted by Islamic people. Moreover, the Iranian top leader Mr. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini called for Mr. Salman Rushdie’s assassination and put a reward for his death.
Mr. Salman Rushdie was in hiding for a period of time, due to threats. He only started living with his family and emerged from hiding, after the Iranian Government 1998 said it won’t enforce that ‘fatwa’ or the death edict.
