Japan raises volcano alert

Tokyo: The officials on Tuesday raised a volcano alert after witnessing a volcanic eruption at a resort near Tokyo. The authorities also restricted the access to the area and warned the possibility of more eruptions. However, no reports of injuries or damage have been registered.

The volcanic ash was emitted from a valley on Mount Hakone, which is known for its hot springs, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The warning was raised to level on the mountain to 3 from 2 by the agency. An official of the agency also confirmed that on the mountain there has been some ash detected near the area of a news steam vent. The official added that it was a small scale eruption but there are chance of more eruptions.

Japan is a seismically active areas and has witnessed several earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in recent years. Nearly 63 people were killed when a volcano erupted in central Japan in last September.
