Today is Nelson Mandela’s 100th birth anniversary and on this occasion let’s learn some interesting facts about the late anti apartheid revolutionary. Mandela was the man who successfully fought against racial segregation and discrimination. This made Mandela a global symbol for human rights and was awarded the Nobel Prize, for Peace.   

Here are some amazing facts about the man who made history:

1. Nelson Mandela was the first black President of South Africa. He served as the president from 1994 to 1999 and was the first President after the end of apartheid.

2. Rolihlahla which means pulling the branch of a tree or troublemaker was Mandela’s real first name. Nelson was the name given to him by a teacher. In the early 20th century South African children were given English names due to the colonial presence.

3. During Mandela’s struggle, he would disguise himself to escape being arrested for his political activity. His favorites were dressing like a field worker or a chef.

4. Mandela spent about 27 years in different prisons for inciting strikes and leaving the country without permission. But Mandela never gave up and continued to fight against apartheid.

5. While serving his sentence Mandela was kept in a small cell with no bed or plumbing. In the day he was made to work at a limestone quarry.

6. The harmful work environment permanently damaged Mandela’s eyes. The damage resulted in the leader losing function of his tear ducts meaning Mandela could not cry for the last years of his life.

7. Mandela got his Bachelor of Law Degree while in prison from the University of South Africa.

8. Nelson Mandela married three women and had six children, 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

9. In just one term of Mandela’s presidency 1.5 million South African children were enrolled in school and 2 million people gained access to electricity.

10. Mandela was a champion of women’s rights during his life. In his State of the Nation address in 1994 Mandela was quoted as saying, “Freedom cannot be achieved unless the women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression.”

11. Nelson Mandela was one of the most influential people and was highly respected. He entertained celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Michael Jackson and Sugar Ray Leonard in South Africa.

12. Once Mandela achieved his goal of ending apartheid in South Africa he became a champion of world peace. He worked with leaders like Fidel Castro from Cuba and Muammar Gaddafi from Libya in a bid to promote peace.

13. Mandela was criticised for befriending these leaders to which he responded, “The enemies of countries in the West are not our enemies.”

Nelson Mandela spent his years trying to make the world a better place. His words of peace are enlightening and still remain in the hearts of most. People from all over the world appreciate him for his dedication and fight against racial discrimination.
