The suicide bomb attack in the Peshawar region of Pakistan killed 61 people and left approximately 150 severely injured, confirmed police on the 31st of January, Tuesday.
The suicide attacker belonging to the terror group Taliban blew himself up in a mosque packed with worshippers during afternoon prayers on Monday, the 30th of January, Monday. The incident occurred in the high security zone in Pakistan’s restive northwestern Peshawar city, near the police lines. The incident left as many as 61 people dead and 150 injured, mostly policemen, medical staff and other police officials. The rescue operation is underway and the death toll and the number of injured people could increase.
The Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the blast, said to be a revenge. According to sources, Umar Khalid, the brother of a slain commander of the TTP claimed that the suicide blast was part of the revenge attack for his brother who was killed last August in Afghanistan.
In addition, the rescue operation in charge Bilal Faizi said, “We are currently focused on the rescue operation. Our first priority is to safely retrieve the people buried under the debris.” Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar Muhammad Ijaz Khan said the incident occurred due to a security lapse. Moreover, Provincial Police chief Moazzam Jah Ansari said they are investigating the blast and how the bomber entered the highly fortified mosque.
Meanwhile, Mr. Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, condemned the attack and said, “Terrorists want to create fear by targeting those who perform the duty of defending Pakistan.” He further added, “The entire nation is standing united against the menace of terrorism.”
The Pakistan Police and Army launched an investigation into the horrific suicide attack.
