On the 7th of October, the Nobel Prize Committee announced the 2019 Nobel Prize winners for Physiology or Medicine.

William G Kaelin Jr., Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza, scientists who worked together and won the Nobel Prize for their discoveries. They researched for long 20 years and discovered “how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.”

The committee also announced a cash prize of 9,000,000 Swedish krona, which will be shared by the three of them.

The event was organised at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.

The three scientists bagged 110th Nobel Prize in the category of Physiology or Medicine since 1901, which was introduced in the will of Alfred Nobel, a businessman.

Thomas Perlmann, the Secretary of the Nobel Committee said the discoveries of these three people “have fundamental importance for physiology and have paved the way for promising new strategies to fight anaemia, cancer and many other diseases.”

According to their discovery, medical science can grow and explore how oxygen levels affect cellular metabolism and physiological functions. The discovery could help pharmacies and medical science to make drugs to fight serious disease like cancer.
