Turkey – 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Kills 20 People

On the 24th of January, at 8:55 P.M. (local time of Turkey) an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 led to the death of 20 people and left several people injured in the region of Turkey. 

Neighbouring regions like Syria, Lebanon and Iran also suffered due to the earthquake. 

According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (Afad, ) more than 400 rescue teams rushed to the spot for help.

Beds, tents,first aid and other necessary needs were also fulfilled for the people stuck there. 

The AFAD also warned people not to return to damaged buildings or it may increase the numbers of aftershocks in the region. 

As of now, almost 200 aftershock cases were recorded. 

In  Elazig province, 16 died, whereas, 4 people died in Malatya. 

Overnight the temperature fell below to – 8 degree Celsius. 

The Turkish Red Crescent also helped people and deployed hundreds of personnel for emergency supplies. 

As of now rescue operation is underway.
