On the 7th of February, Tuesday, advocate Lakshmana Chandra Victoria Gowri took oath as the judge of the Madras High Court, despite petitions filed against her elevation.

Notably, a group of 21 lawyers from the Madras High Court opposed the Union Government’s decision of elevating advocate Victoria Gowri as the HC judge.  The lawyers cited instances where Victoria Gowri was seen making hateful remarks against minority communities. The lawyers alleged that it reflected her “regressive views” and “deep-rooted religious bigotry”, thus making her “unfit to be appointed as judge of the High Court”.   The lawyers also highlighted one of the interviews of Ms. Lakshmana Chandra Victoria Gowri, where she termed Christianity as “white terror” and had made a similar “distasteful diatribe” against Christians.

However, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court (SC) bench comprising headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, dismissed the petition.

Meanwhile, after taking the oath as the Madras High Court Judge, Ms. Lakshmana Chandra Victoria Gowri said, “ “I bow to the noble feet of all the elder brother and sister judges who are on the dais and who are watching from my beloved Madurai Bench.”

Besides Ms. Lakshmana Chandra Victoria Gowri, four other advocates took oath as the Madras High Court judges.  All the newly introduced judges would have a tenure of two years.
