Shams Tabrez, a 24 year old resident of Jharkhand, died on the 22nd of June, days after he was beaten up by a mob in Jharkhand.
The incident took place on the 18th of June, when Shams was going back home from Jamshedpur and a mob attacked him. They caught Shams and alleged him of stealing a motorcycle, following which, they tied him to a pole and beat him for 7 long hours.
Later, on the 19th of June, he was handed over to the local police, who neglected his medical requirements. After a regular check up, he was transferred to the Seraikela District Jail, where his condition deteriorated.
The police immediately took him to the district’s Sadar Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
A relative of Shams spoke about the incident and said, “There (Saraikela,) a motorcycle theft took place and these people were passing by… so the villagers caught them and then beat him up very badly. There were two friends with him who ran away.” He further said, “My elder brother went to see him at the Saraikela police station. But the officers threatened and shooed them away with lathis, saying, ‘You have come to talk for the thief’. They threatened to put him in jail as well. We were not allowed to meet him.”
Shams’ family said, the group of people beat Shams badly and also forced him to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Hanuman.’
Shams’ family registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the police, who neglected the medical needs of Shams and did not take any action against the people who attacked him.
Shams’ family alleged the police officials for his death and said, “We want all the officials at the police station, the jail and all the villagers who beat him up to be charged.”
After an initial investigation, on the 25th of June, the Seraikela Kharsawan Police arrested the 11 accused and suspended 2 police officials related to the case.
Kartik S., the Superintendent of Police of Seraikela Kharsawan, said, “We are looking into all angles. His family members mentioned some unidentified miscreants in their complaint. Based on that, we have already arrested eleven people, including a man named Papu Mandal.”
The Police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the case. The SIT was also asked to submit a report about the case to the Home Secretary and the Chief Secretary of Jharkhand.
Why don’t home minister @AmitShah and prime minister @narendramodi_in make a strong public statement against these growing mob lynchings, be it religious extremism or rumors whatever. I have not seen even a single tweet at all. #JharkhandLynching #MobLynching

The vision of India I had was not this. Sanatan which is known for its spirituality and freedom, has been reduced to opressing other religions. Mob mentality is anyway toxic, but this is more sick. It might not be terrorism yet but this is where it starts. #JharkhandLynching pic.twitter.com/hpEXSzHz1B
