Kathua Rape And Murder Case: Accused Transferred to Gurdaspur Jail

On Monday, the Supreme Court (SC) ordered the transfer of the accused in the Kathua gang rape and murder case. The order is for the transfer of the accused rapists from the Kathua prison in Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab’s Gurdaspur district jail.

The SC bench comprising of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices D. Y. Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra directed the Jammu and Kashmir police to file an auxiliary charge sheet within 2 months. It also ordered the governments of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir to provide security to the trial judge and the special public prosecutor of the case.

It was also decided the Jammu and Kashmir Government will make sure that the families of the accused can meet them at the Punjab jail. The expenses will be borne by the Jammu and Kashmir Government. Deepika Rajawat, the victim’s lawyer was pleased with the proceedings and the decision of the SC.

At the request of the victim’s father, the trial was moved to Pathankot. In his petition, he explained the threat to his family and requested for the shift. This was the first development made in the case since the trial was moved.

A minor from a Muslim nomadic shepherd community was abducted, raped and murdered in Rassana village of the Kathua district in January. The eight year old girl from the Bakarwal community went missing while grazing horses in the forest. Her body was recovered from the forest after seven days on January 17.

According to the charge sheet filed, the victim’s body had traces of multiple gang rapes. Also, traces of rituals were found on her body suggesting she was held captive in a prayer hall.
