Defaulter and fugitive Vijay Mallya, the owner of Kingfisher Airlines was arrested today in London. The Scotland Yard Police arrested him on the extradition warrant and will produce him in the Westminster Magistrates’ Court by the evening on Tuesday.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of India has been involved about this by the British Authorities. In February, the Indian government submitted a formal letter to the UK High Commission for the fugitive’s extradition. The Letter said that there was a legitimate case against him for loan defaulting and financial miscalculations in hundreds of crores.

Scotland Yard Police told the PTI, “Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Extradition Unit this morning arrested a man on an extradition warrant. Vijay Mallya was arrested on behalf of the Indian authorities in relation to accusations of fraud.” In March 2016, Mallya fled to England after the courts issued an arrest warrant against him for the recovery of Rs. 9000 crores that the now grounded Kingfisher Airlines owed to various banks. Multiple attempts were made to extradite him and present him before the sleuths of Enforcement Directorate in relation to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) but to no avail.

After this, a special court for Prevention of Money Laundering issued a Non-Bailable Warrant against Mallya in April 2016. Another such case with NBW was registered against Mallya in January 2017, for the default of IDBI loan. Mallya will be presented in court for all these hearings after being extradited.
