The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA,) on the 31st of January, ordered Alok Verma, the former Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI,) to join the CBI again. However, if he joins, it will be only for a day, as he retires today (on the 31st of January.)

The MHA sent a letter to Mr. Verma, which states, “You are directed to join the post of DG, Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards immediately.”

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Selection Committee, on the 10th of January, removed Alok Verma as the CBI Director.

The Committee, which includes PM Modi, Mallikarjun Kharge, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC,) and Justice A.K. Sikri, with a majority of 2:1, removed Verma as the CBI Director. Later, he was made the Director General (DG) of the Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards.

Disappointed with the judgement of the Selection Committee, Alok Verma resigned from the DG post. He said, “I was only serving the Government as CBI Director until January 31, 2019 as it was a fixed tenure role.”

However, on the 31st of January, the MHA rejected Verma’s resignation letter and ordered him to join for a day.

The rejection came after Alok Verma requested the Government to consider him superannuated from the 11th of January 2019, a day after his exit as the CBI Director.

Alok Verma is an Arunachal Pradesh,Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1979 batch. He became the CBI Director in the year 2017.
