The Supreme Court (SC) held a hearing on the petition filed by Alok Verma in the top court, today.

Alok Verma, the former Central Bureau Investigation Director, filed a petition against the Central Government’s orders of sending him on compulsory leave. Following the petition, the SC ordered the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to conduct a probe under the supervision of A.K. Patnaik, a former Supreme Court judge.

The dispute leading to Alok Verma’s dismissal from the CBI started when Alok Verma and the CBI Special Director, Rakesh Asthana, alleged each other of bribery and corruption.

The CVC submitted a report based on its investigation of the allegations against Alok Verma, today. The bench of judges led by Ranjan Gogoi, the Chief Justice of India (CJI,) said, “CVC has filed an exhaustive report. The report has been categorised and is very complimentary on some charges, not so complimentary on some charges and very uncomplimentary on some charges. CVC report says some charges are required to be investigated and they need time.” A copy of the report was given to Alok Verma, K.K. Venu Gopal, the Attorney General and Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General.

Ranjan Gogoi ordered Alok Verma to respond to the report by the 19th of November and said, “This report can be given to you in a sealed cover and you give reply in sealed cover.”

The SC also said, they will take a decision about the petitions filed by A.K. Bassi and Mallikarjun Kharge, later.

The next hearing of the Alok Verma case will be held on the 20th of November.
