Ramdas Athawale, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, on the 20st of January, invited Mayawati Das, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP,) to form an alliance with the Party.

Ramdas Athawale is the Minister of State of Social Justice and Empowerment of India and the chief of the Republican Party of India (RPI.) The RPI is also a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA,) led by the BJP.

Mr. Athawale said, “Mayawati became Uttar Pradesh chief minister thrice with BJP’s support. The BSP cadre knows well that the alliance with the SP will not give desired electoral gains in the Lok Sabha polls. Instead of the SP, Mayawati should again join hands with the BJP.”

Unhappy with the alliance between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the BSP, Athawale said, “Reports from various parts of Uttar Pradesh suggest that SP and BSP supporters were unhappy with the tie up.”

Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav, the SP chief, joined hands for the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh (UP.) The parties officially announced the merger against the BJP on the 12th of January.

The BSP and the SP also shared their 50:50 seat sharing strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, the Congress party was not included in the alliance. The BSP and the SP said, the alliance will not contest in Amethi and Rae Bareli, leaving 2 seats for the Congress party.

The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to take place between April and May 2019. In UP, the parties will contest 80 Lok Sabha seats and the major parties contesting are the BJP, the BSP, the SP, and the Congress party.
