The Supreme Court (SC,) on the 9th of May, dismissed the petition filed to find out the citizenship of Rahul Gandhi, the President of the Indian National Congress (INC.)

Jai Bhagwan Goyal and Chander Prakash Tyagi, residents of Delhi, filed a petition to know the nationality of Rahul Gandhi. Mr. Goyal and Mr. Tyagi in their petition said, in a UK based company’s annual data of 2005 to 2006, it is mentioned Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen.

The main concern of the petitioners is to know whether Gandhi can contest the Lok Sabha elections or not.

Rahul Gandhi filed his nominations to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala.

However, a bench of judges head by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, dismissed the case and said, “If some company in some form mentions his nationality as British, does he become a British citizen.”

The nationality of Mr. Gandhi is seen to be a major issue for the opposition parties. Last month also, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) asked Mr. Gandhi to respond about his nationality, based on Subramanian Swamy’s complaints.

Subramanian Swamy, a member of the BJP complained that Rahul Gandhi is lying about his citizenship and has a British citizenship.

The Government asked Rahul Gandhi for proof and to respond within 15 days, as India does not allow dual nationality.

According to the election guidelines, only Indian citizens can contest the elections in India.
This is not the first time, the BJP filed a petition, in 2015 also, the Party moved the SC and accused Gandhi of having British citizenship.

However, the SC dismissed the case, following which Rahul Gandhi could continue with the election process and still is a part of the Lok Sabha elections.

Lok Sabha elections started from the 11th of April and will continue till the 19th of May 2019.

The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections are the INC and the BJP.

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
