The Government on Wednesday in an attempt to end the VIP culture issued an order that prohibits the use of the red beacons on VIP vehicles. These vehicles include VIPs, Ministers, and Lawmakers.

The President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Speaker of Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India are exempted from this ban. This new rule will be implemented from the 1st of May 2017. As per rules, 32 Cabinet Ministers and those in the rank of cabinet ministers were allowed the use of red beacons previously. The usage was high in states which are from now on banned.

This topic is considered politically highly sensitive and hence the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) was called for a meeting last week to address this issue. The Road Transport Ministry after consultation with cabinet ministers forwarded three options to the PMO and one of these was to end the use of red beacons. According to reports, this proposal was pending for more than one and half year.

Even before this regulation was passed, some of the Ministers stopped using red beacons. The first was Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi and its ministers who stopped using the red beacons. More recently, after the Assembly elections, Amarinder Singh’s government in Punjab and Adityanath Yogi’s government in Uttar Pradesh have stopped the use of red beacons setting an example for the rest of the states.
