A lawyer was arrested by the Chintadripet Police on charges of having murdered his adopted daughter. He killed his little four year old daughter after realizing she has a speech disorder.
Though the murder took place in July 2016, the police took action recently because a new Chennai City Police Commissioner instructed all subordinate officers to finish off all the pending cases.
The lawyer, X. Gerald and his wife, Sangeetha, who works as a lecturer in Dr. Ambedkar Law University adopted the child in May 2016 from a private orphanage. On July 7, 2016, the child was rushed to the Child Trust Hospital in Nungambakkam with injuries. However, the doctors said the child was dead on arrival. Later, the body was sent to a government hospital for autopsy.
The hospital authorities already indicated there were suspicious injuries on the body of the child. But the case was not seriously dealt with, the police source said.
On Thursday, the Chintadripet police inspector, Sahadevan summoned Gerald and questioned him about the murder. From the investigation, it became very clear to the police that the lawyer is the murderer and they arrested him.
Gerald explained to the police they had chosen the child and named her as Mirudula, before realizing that she had an articulation problem. He have cruelly treated her by giving her shock treatment. The police said Gerald had beaten the child repeatedly because of which the child suffered injuries and collapsed on July 7, 2016.
