Arunachal Pradesh Teachers Use Deplorable Punishment

In a shocking case, the Arunachal Pradesh police filed a First Information Report against the teachers of a school in Papum Pare district. The teachers are accused of making 88 girl students strip as a form of punishment.

The report states two assistant teachers and a junior teacher forced 6 and 7 Class students from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya were made to undress in front of the rest of the students. The teachers punished the 88 girls after one of the students apparently wrote something vulgar about the Head Teacher and a girl.

The distraught girls approached the All Sagalee Students Union and then filed a complaint with the local police on the 27th of November. On Wednesday, Papum Pare Superintendent of Police Tumme Amo confirmed the case and stated the case was moved to the women’s police station in Itanagar.

Tumme Amo reported, “The officer in charge of the (women’s) police station said the victims and their parents along with the teachers will be interrogated before registering a case.”

The All Papum Pare District Students Union met the teachers and students and found the vulgar words written by one unidentified student.

The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee has condemned the punishment. In a statement they said, “Tempering with a child’s dignity is against the law as well as the Constitution.”

Undressing a student as a form of punishment is shameful and causes more harm than good. The Congress Committee stated, “Imposing such punishment is total violation of child rights, and more likely it may accelerate the risk of child abuse.”
