Hyderabad Police Release Strict Drunk Driving Rules On New Year’s Eve

The Hyderabad Traffic Police has issued a warning for drunk driving on New Year’s Eve. The police stated 100 Special Teams would be deployed in the city with breath analyzers.

On New Year’s Eve, all the flyovers in the city will be blocked from 11 P.M. to 5 A.M. Only people traveling to the airport will be allowed on the flyovers.

This strict warning is to curb accidents and drunk driving cases in the city that rise on New Year’s Eve every year. The police informed the people caught drunk driving might be sent to Chanchalguda Prison for a minimum of one day to 15 days.

Officials said the first time offenders will have their vehicles seized and will have to pay a penalty. While multiple offenders will be awarded imprisonment.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) A. V. Ranganath said, “We will video record the entire drink driving check. If any citizen resists the breathalyzer test, we have the option of escorting the individual concerned to the nearest government hospital for blood test.”

The Hyderabad Police earlier issued restrictions and guidelines to the management of starred hotels, clubs and pubs. In a press release, the Rachakonda Police said New Year’s programmes need to be held between 8 P.M., to 1 A.M.

The press release further informed, “ORR will be closed from 11 P.M. to 5 A.M., for the general public except bonafide passengers traveling to and from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA). All flyovers will be closed from 11 P.M. to 5 A.M.”

The permissible limit of alcohol is 30 micrograms/100 ml of blood. If the breath analyzer records anything more it will be considered drunk driving.
Last year, the police detained and arrested 957 drunk drivers and registered 1,594 drunk driving cases in the city on New Year’s Eve.
