Three postal workers held for exchange of old notes in Hyderabad

Three postal workers in Hyderabad were held by the Central Bureau of Investigation for the exchange of old demonetised notes. They were accused of replacing Rs.36 Lakhs of old notes in denominatized Rs.500 and Rs.1000 with Rs.2000 notes.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI,) booked these three employees of the Indian postal service in Hyderabad on Monday. They were accused of exchanging currency without carrying out the requisite documentation. A first information report was filed against Sudheer Babu, the senior superintendent of the post, G. Revathi, a sub-postmaster, and G. Ravi Teja, an office assistant.

The CBI believes they have helped various public servants and private individuals in the exchanging of old notes to new ones. Those who have exchanged these notes have not been identified yet. According to an IANS report, officials believe that they took the old demonetised high denomination notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes and gave out new Rs. 2,000 notes. These Rs.2000 notes were meant for public disbursal on November 12. During interrogation by the Central Bureau of Investigation, Sudheer Babu, the Superintendent, admitted that he exchanged the notes without filing the proper paperwork.

The CBI had conducted a surprise check at the post office on November 24 based on information that there were irregularities in the exchange documents there. The three employees have been booked for criminal conspiracy, criminal misconduct, criminal breach of trust by public servants, cheating and falsification of books of accounts.
