Amidst increasing cow vigilantes or ‘gau rakshaks’ and people protesting these illegal groups, the BJP government has come up with an idea to control cow smuggling and slaughter. The government has decided to provide cows with an Aadhar card type Unique Identification Numbers across all states in the Country.

In a report that was submitted to the Supreme Court on Monday, the Centre has written that “Each cow and its progeny across India should get a Unique Identification Number for tracking.” The Centre said that this move was an attempt to protect cows and their smuggling across the India-Bangladesh border. The Centre also told the SC that Joint Secretary of Home Ministry has been informed regarding this matter and he has set certain recommendations,

The report also said, “Responsibility of safety and care of abandoned animals is mainly of the State government.” It said the states should have shelter homes for animals which have a minimum capacity of 500 animals that have been abandoned. The Centre also said that this responsibility of the security of these animals lies with the state government.

Adding to the report, the Centre said that the cattle, after the age of milking must be provided with security. The report also read that the scheme is aimed at improving the situation of farmers that have been facing trouble because of drought.
