Amitabh Bachchan has been made the brand ambassador for the upcoming Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Congress is objecting. On Wednesday, Congress’ Mumbai unit urged the actor to withdraw from being the face of the GST.

Sanjay Nirupam, Mumbai Congress President said, “Both Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Finance Minister (Arun Jaitley) know that the government is not ready nor does it have the infrastructure to roll out GST. That’s why it is using a legend like Amitabh Bachchan so that he becomes the fall guy and has to face the brickbats.”

Sanjay Nirupam also said that he adored and respected the actor and asking him to back out of the GST was to just caution him against the government using him on the issue of GST.

Sanjay also questioned, “The idea was ‘One Country, One Tax,’ but what is being rolled out is one country and at least four taxes. Why are Indians being fooled? And why use an icon and his credibility to fool them?”

Amitabh Bachchan even responded to Sanjay’s caution on social media and said since he was asked to do it, he did it.

The advertisement shows the actor explaining the benefits of the GST in a 40 second video. The legendary actor is also the brand ambassador for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’s new campaign ‘Darwaza Band’ (Door Shut) and Gujurat Tourism.
