INSV Tarini Grand Voyage To Conclude

Today, the INSV Tarini carrying a 6 member ‘all woman’ crew of the Indian Navy entered South Africa’s Cape Town. This expedition is named Navika Sagar Parikrama; the crew on the INSV Tarini plans on circumnavigating the globe. The crew captained by the Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi comprises of Lieutenant Commanders P. Swathi, Pratibha Jamwal and Lieutenants B. Aishwarya, S. Vijaya Devi and Payal Gupta.

The Navy Spokesman D. K. Sharma said, “INSV Tarini entered Cape Town (South Africa) today during its maiden voyage to circumnavigate the globe. This is the first ever Indian circumnavigation of the globe by an all women crew.” Sharma was quoted saying, “The crew and the vessel have encountered rough seas and extremely cold temperature coupled with stormy weather conditions, making the task of circumnavigation highly daunting and challenging. The vessel’s passage through the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans thus far, has witnessed winds in excess of 60 knots and waves up to 7 meters high.”

The Navika Sagar Parikrama is being covered in 5 legs, Fremantle in Australia, Lyttelton in New Zealand, Port Stanley in Falklands, Cape Town in South Africa and back to Goa. The vessel has covered a total of 17,500 nautical miles starting from Goa. The crew crossed the equator on the 25th of September 2017, Cape Leeuwin on the 9th of November and reached Cape Horn on the 19th of January 2018. Currently, the INSV Tarini has covered 80% of their voyage and are set to depart from Cape Town on the 14th of March.

Earlier, the Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman flagged off INSV Tarini from Goa on the 10th of September 2017 as a part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The INSV Tarini, a 56 foot vessel and the second sailboat of the Indian Navy is currently showcasing the Make in India initiative internationally.
