Stephen Hawking: Interesting Facts About This Magnificent Physicist

As everyone reminisces the loss of Physicist Stephen Hawking, we decided to make a list of his most interesting facts.

Hawking was a man admired for his brilliant mind. He contributed his life and dedicated himself to the world of science. The renowned physicist passed away peacefully at his home in Cambridge on Wednesday morning.  

Hawking penned a number of books but A Brief History of Time is one of his best works. At the age of 22 Hawking was diagnosed with a rare motor neuron disease. The doctors back then said he would have a few years to live. But striving for knowledge Hawking lived till he was 76.

Here are some interesting facts you might not know about Professor Hawking:

1. Bad Grades In School: Hawking was a slacker in school and it showed in his grades. Surprisingly one of the brightest minds of the 21st Century ranked the worst in class at the age of 9. He worked hard in school and managed to get average grades but nothing better.

 

2. Loved To Disassemble: Although Hawking slacked off in school he was a curious student who wanted to know how everything worked. He loved disassembling clocks and radios but always failed to put them back together.

3. Surprise Scholarship: Hawking’s father hoped his son would join Oxford but the family did not have the money. His father was depending on him getting a scholarship but with his grades, it did not seem possible. However, Hawking showed his brilliant mind after he aced the scholarship exams with a perfect score in Physics.

 

4. Rowed For Popularity: The first year in Oxford was depressing for Hawking. To get out of this rut and make friends, he joined the rowing team. Hawking was never the athletic type but was perfect for the coxswains position in rowing. Coxswains is the position where the person does not row but guide and steer the boat.          

 

5. Hawking’s Best Experience: Stephen Hawking was in a wheelchair for most of his life and at the age of 65 got to experience zero gravity. In 2007, the Zero Gravity Corp., took Hawking on an airplane ride. This service airplane allows passengers to experience weightlessness with the sharp ascent and descent. People close to Hawking said he had the biggest smile on his face and was never happier.

6. The π Day: Hawking passed away today which is celebrated as Pi Day. The 14th of March 2018 is the 30th anniversary to celebrate the mathematical constant Pi.
