John Allen Chau, an American tourist, was allegedly killed by a tribe residing on Andaman Island and protected under the Indian law, on Saturday.
The incident came to light after the police registered a murder case yesterday evening. John was shot by arrows by the tribals of the North Sentinel Island.
The tribals of the Sentinel Island are known to be the protectors of the Island, safeguarding the area against any outside contact and interference. The Island has a population of 150 people and the Sentinelese tribe attacks anyone who tries to enter the area. The tribes are residing in the region since the year 2011.
John, 27 years old, was a traveller, who wished to visit the Sentinel Island to convert the Sentinelese to Christianity. John tried to get to the North Sentinel Island on the 14th of November, but failed to do so. After many failed attempts, he asked the local fishermen for help and gave them money in order to reach the Island. John was visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for the fifth time.
An anonymous source said, “He was attacked by arrows but he continued walking. The fishermen saw the tribals tying a rope around his neck and dragging his body. They were scared and fled but returned next morning to find his body on the seashore.”
The fishermen were the only individuals who witnessed the incident. They narrated the story to Alex, a local preacher and Chau’s friend, who informed the police and John’s family in the U.S.
The U.S Embassy contacted the Delhi Embassy for help, in order to find out the body. The authorities of Andaman and Nicobar Islands launched search operations and helicopters were sent for the same. The search for Chau’s body is still in progress.
The police arrested the fishermen and an interrogation is underway.
