Eleven people died and 82 were hospitalised after eating prasad (religious food offering) at a temple in Chamarajanagar, Karnataka, on Friday.

The people gathered together to attend the inauguration of the temple’s Gopuram (a monumental entrance tower) in Sulewadi village of Hanur town, 474.5 km from Karnataka.

The victims were rushed to different government and private hospitals in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar and are undergoing treatment.

B.B. Kaveri, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP,) Chamarajnagar, said, “When the devotees consumed the prasadam, several of them began vomiting. The people present outside the temple called 108 and the ambulance rushed them to Kamagere Holy Cross Hospital. Death toll may increase but we are trying to stabilise all the patients. They are spread across various private and government hospitals in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar district.”

A police official said, “Doctors think the toxin could be pesticide.”

The officials collected a sample of the prasad and immediately sent it to a laboratory for testing.

According to sources, the reason behind the incident is yet to be discovered. However, it is suspected that a dispute between the temple administration and the villagers regarding the Gopuram could have caused the villagers to take the drastic measure. The police took Gowdruchinnatti, a member of the temple administration and Maadesh, the manager of the temple, into custody and are interrogating them.

H.D. Kumaraswamy, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, expressed grief over the incident and said, “There is an unfortunate food poisoning incident in Kamgere village. I have instructed the Principal Secretary and the deputy commissioner, the DHOs of Mandya, and Mysuru help to Chamrajnagar health officials tackle the matter. The samples of the rice have been sent for testing. We will get to the bottom of this.”

The case is cuurently being investigated.
