The Election Commission (EC) of India, on the 1st of March, clarified, the tense situation between India and Pakistan, post the Pulwama terror attack, will not affect the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Sunil Arora, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC,) on the 1st of March, addressed the media and said, the EC is capable of holding the elections on time, therefore there will not be any delay in conducting them.

Sunil Arora also replied to a question regarding the allegations and complaints made by the opposition parties of Uttar Pradesh regarding the malfunctioning of the electronic voting machines (EVMs.)

Mr. Arora said, the Country has turned the “EVMs into a football, wittingly, unwittingly.” Without naming any particular party, he further said, “If result is X, EVM is fine, if result is Y, then EVM is malfunctioning.”

During the press interaction, Mr. Arora also spoke about the new notification regarding the Model Code of Conduct (MCC.) He said, the candidates filing for the election nominations should provide details about their properties situated in India as well as abroad.

Mr. Arora also said, the Commission will also launch the C Vigil app, through which the citizens of India can lodge any complaint related to the elections.

The EC will also constitute committees to ensure no party violates the MCC and uses social media platforms inappropriately. According to the MCC, using social media campaigns for influencing people to favour a particular party is restricted for the Lok Sabha elections.

The Commission will also look into whether the parties are conducting fair and campaigns ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Sunil Arora visited Uttar Pradesh two days back to ensure the arrangements for the Lok Sabha elections in the State are in place.

The State will poll for 80 Lok Sabha seats and the major parties contesting are the grand alliance of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP,) the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC.)

The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled between April and May 2019.
