On Sunday, reports revealed former Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi will act as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) from Monday replacing Shashi Kant Sharma.

On Monday, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Mehrishi will be administered his oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Mehrishi is from the 1978 IAS officer batch from the Rajasthan Cadre. His tenure will last three years as Mehrishi is 62 years old. The rule states that the tenure of a CAG will be for  six years or until the incumbent reaches the age of 65.

The CAG will be entrusted with the responsibility to audit the accounts of the state governments and the Union governments. The CAG reports are later placed before the Parliament and legislatures of the states.

Mehrishi has a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. He has also studied at Delhi University and attained a Master of Arts and Bachelors of Arts degree.
