Uttar Pradesh Police welcomed its new Chief of Police, Sulakhan Singh, on Saturday. The new DGP had promised to take strict action against “anyone indulging in vigilantism in the name of Gau Raksha.” He also said Chief Minister Adityanath Yogi, has extended him support in this case and to start taking strict action against law breakers.

This comes a fortnight after the Anti-Romeo squad faced flak for acting as moral police and taking action on innocent couples. Singh, speaking to media said, “Action will be taken on anyone indulging in vigilantism in the name of Gau Raksha or anything else, no one has the right to intervene.” He also said that the personnel of Anti-Romeo squad will be given strict instructions about taking action only on people who show objectionable behavior.

The DGP also assured that his officers will not show any partiality and that ‘gundagardi’ will be unacceptable in the State. He said, “Uniform action will be taken against any wrongdoer. There will be no bias, whosoever the culprit is or whatever political connection the person flaunts.” He also said that maximum FIRs will be filed and police will work without pressure from any party or influence in the State.

Singh experienced hurdles during the Samajwadi Party regime, due to his strict stance and impeccable track record throughout his career. Now, with his new position, the officer has promised protection for innocents and strict action on all law breakers.
