Supreme Court Deports Seven Rohingya To Myanmar

The Supreme Court turned down a plea by two Rohingya immigrants for stopping the deportation of 7 Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar. The seven Rohingya men were taken to the Myanmar border by the police on Wednesday.

The Indian Government convicted and imprisoned the 7 men in the year 2012 for illegal entry into India.

When asked about the deportation, PM Modi defended the action and said the illegal Rohingya immigrants can be a threat to national security. He further stated they may be recruited by terror groups.

Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Additional Director General of Police (Border,) Assam said the deportation of illegal foreigners is a routine procedure.

The United Nations criticized the decision of the Central Government and said the refugees’ forcible return could mean a violation of international laws.

Tendayi Achiume, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on racism said, “The Indian government has an international legal obligation to acknowledge the institutionalised discrimination, persecution, hate and gross human rights violations these people have faced in their country of origin and provide them the necessary protection.”

The Supreme Court has refused to stop the deportation stating the Myanmar Government has accepted the Rohingya Muslims as citizens. The Embassy of Myanmar has agreed on providing certificates of identity to the Rohingya refugees.
