Telangana is witnessing a hike in swine flu cases. Until now, approximately 496 people residing in Telangana have been tested positive for swine flu.

Dr. K. Shankar, the Director of the Government Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM,) said, “In January month of 2019 we have tested 1657 swine flu samples from across the Telangana state in which 307 turned swine flu positive.” He further added, “And in February till today we have tested 1108 swine flu samples and in which 189 turned swine flu positive. A total of 496 cases reported till now in this year (sic.)”

The increasing number of cases is a warning for the public to be alert and take precautions to stay safe from the disease.

Speaking about the reasons behind the spike, Mr. Shankar said, it could be due to the fluctuating temperatures in the State. The mortality rate in Telangana due to swine flu is less than that in other States, but the spread of the disease in the State is more.

Swine flu is an infection spread due to the H1N1 virus, one of the most common Swine Influenza Viruses (SIV) in India. The H1N1 virus spreads when an individual comes in contact with a H1NI infected person or breathes the air containing the virus. When someone with H1NI coughs or sneezes, the virus spreads in the air.

The symptoms of swine flu include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches and headaches.

As the number of swine flu cases in the State are on a rise, one should not ignore any of the aforementioned symptoms. If you find yourself or those around you experiencing any of the symptoms, take proper precautions and visit a doctor for a check up immediately.
