35 IIT Students Missing In Himachal Pradesh

Thirty five Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee students went missing in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh on Monday.

Parents were concerned about the missing students. The father of a student, Rajvir Singh, told media that a bunch of students went trekking to Hampta Pass and were scheduled to return to Manali. He said they are unable to connect to the group.

A group of 45 trekkers, including the 35 IIT students, went missing due to heavy rain and snowfall in Kullu, Chamba and Kangra districts of Himachal Pradesh. The regions of Himachal Pradesh such as Palampur, Manali and Shimla witnessed the highest rainfall of 180mm.

According to sources, eight people have lost their lives because of floods in the Beas river and Parbati river in Manikaran Valley, both in the Kullu district. People staying in the danger marked regions have been advised to evacuate the areas and high alerts have been announced by the District Administration.

District Tourism Development Officer B.S. Negi said, “All adventurous sports activities, including paragliding, have been banned in Kullu.”

Schools were closed down in Chamba, Kullu, Sirmaur, Kangra and Hamirpur districts and routes connecting Leh and Manali were suspended due to heavy floods and landslides. The situation has damaged a lot of properties, swept away homes and led to heavy destruction amounting to Rs. 20 crores.

Authorities sought help from the Indian Air Force (IAF) to handle the rescue operations and an IAF craft rescued 19 people stuck in Kullu. Authorities have taken measures to stabilize the situation by discharging excess water from the Pandoh Diversion Dam.

Authorities are concerned as the excess rainfall can affect neighbouring states like Haryana and Punjab as the main rivers like Satluj, Yamuna and Beas enter Haryana and Punjab.
