The Congress marked its victory in the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, on the 11th of December. Chhattisgarh conducted its Legislative Assembly elections in two phases, on the 12th of November and the 20th of November respectively.

The major parties which contested the elections were the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (JCC.)

According to the Election Commission (EC,) a total of 46 Assembly seats were required to form a government in Chhattisgarh.

The Congress secured a majority of 68 seats out of the 90 Assembly seats. The BJP secured 15 seats, the BSP won 2 seats and the JCC managed to gain 7 seats in the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference, P.L. Punia, a Chhattisgarh Congress leader, said, “We humbly accept the mandate. People have not just given us adhikar (mandate) but assigned us the duty to fulfil the agenda we had promised before elections.”

Following the Chhattisgarh elections’ results, Raman Singh, the Chief Minister (CM) of Chhattisgarh and a BJP member, submitted his resignation to Anandiben Patel, the Governor of the State and apologised for the poor performance of the BJP.

The Congress will conduct a legislature party meeting today, around 8:00 P.M., in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Tamradhwaj Sahu, Bhupesh Baghel and T.S. Singh Deo are some of the members expected to be nominated for the CM’s post.

The official announcement about the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh is likely to be made after today’s party meeting.
