CJI Steps Down From M. Nageswara Rao’s Appointment Case, CJI Gogoi recuses from hearing PIL, Chief Justice of India, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, M Nageshwar Rao as CBI Interim Director, Mango News, M Nageswara Rao as CBI interim head,

Ranjan Gogoi, the Chief Justice of India (CJI,) withdrew from the bench which will hear the case about M. Nageswara Rao’s appointment as the Interim Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI.)

CJI Ranjan Gogoi stepped down from the bench as he is one of the members of the Selection Committee which will decide the new CBI Director.

Recently, Common Cause, a non governmental organisation (NGO,) filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC,) challenging the appointment of M. Nageswara Rao as the interim CBI Director. Activist Anjali Bhardwaj claimed, the process of the appointment is illegal and pled for a hearing.

As CJI Ranjan Gogoi recused himself, another bench of the SC led by Justice A.K. Sikri will hear the petition filed against the appointment of Mr. Rao.

Mr. Gogoi said, “Let it be posted before another bench.”

The Selection Committee which will select the new CBI Director consists of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Mallikarjun Kharge, a senior leader of the Congress party.

The Selection Committee is expected to meet on the 24th of January and decide who the new CBI Director will be.
