Justice Ranjan Gogoi took oath as the 46th Chief Justice of India today. The oath was administered by President Ram Nath Kovind at Darbar Hall, Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi.

Ranjan Gogoi will be the successor of former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra. Notable personalities such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and H. D. Deve Gowda witnessed the ceremony.

Ranjan Gogoi will have a tenure of over 13 months till the 17th of November, 2019.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was one of the four Judges of the Supreme Court. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in the month of April 2012 after his nine year tenure as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Justice Gogoi is the son of Keshab Chandra Gogoi, a former Assam chief minister under the Indian National Congress regime in 1982. He is a native from Assam who will be the first CJI from the northeastern region of the country.
