The Election Commission (EC) of India, on the 18th of March, announced the commencement of the filing of nominations for the 1st phase of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The filing of nominations for the first phase of the elections started from the 18th of March and will continue till the 25th of March 2019.
The Returning Officers (ROs) of all the states will file the nominations after receiving the necessary documents of the candidates.
In the first phase of the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, approximately 20 States are contesting a total of 91 seats.

The last date for filing nominations is the 25th of March, whereas the scrutiny will be done by the 26th of March. After the nominations are filed and the scrutiny is done, the candidates will get 2 days to withdraw their names from the elections.
Asadudddin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM,) was one of the first candidates to file his nominations. Owaisi submitted his papers to the RO for the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency.
The EC will also announce about the nomination filing dates for the Assembly elections of 4 States, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
The Lok Sabha elections are divided into 7 phases, scheduled on the 11th of April, 18th of April, 23rd of April, 29th of April, 6th of May, 12th of May and 19th of May.
The results of the Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections of all the constituencies will be declared on the 23rd of May 2019.
