Vanama Venkateshwara Rao, a member of the Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 17th of March, switched to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS,) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Vanama Rao announced his decision to resign from the INC and expressed his desire to join the TRS and K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana and the TRS President.

According to sources, Vanama Rao met KCR at the latter’s farmhouse in Erravelli, Hyderabad and expressed his desire to join the Party. However, Vanama Rao’s reason to quit the INC is still unconfirmed.

Vanama Venkateshwara Rao is the 8th Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) to quit the INC and join the TRS.

Previously, Atram Sakku, Rega Kantha Rao, Haripriya Naik, C.H. Lingaiah, P. Sabita Indra Reddy, D. Sudhir Reddy and Upender Reddy also announced their decision to switch to the TRS.

The switching of MLAs could be a major drawback for the INC in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Telangana.

The INC needs approximately 12 MLAs to stand as an opposition party against the TRS and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

The INC won a total of 19 seats in the Telangana Assembly elections, after 8 MLAs left the Party. The Party has only 11 MLAs left to contest the Lok Sabha seats.

Telangana will contest a total of 17 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled on the 11th of April.

The major Parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections are the INC, the TRS and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)
