Beeram Harshavardhan Reddy, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Indian National Congress (INC,) will switch his Party, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana.
Harshavardhan Reddy, on the 20th of March, announced, he will join the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS,) a few weeks before the Lok Sabha elections.
However, an official announcement regarding him becoming a TRS member is yet to be made.
Harshavardhan met K.T. Rama Rao (KTR,) the Working President of the TRS, and proposed to join the Party. After the switching of Harshavardhan, the total number of MLAs in the INC would decrease to 11.
Recently, 8 MLAs left the INC and joined the TRS, following which, the TRS is said to be one of the strongest opposition Party in the Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking about the reason, Harshavardhan said, K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR,) the Chief Minister of Telangana, assured him, compensation would be given to the evacuees of the irrigation projects in his constituency, Kollapur. He also said, KCR promised to launch development projects and promote the growth of the residents of Kollapur.
Reddy will be the 9th MLA to switch from the INC, which might lead to the INC losing the opposition status in the Lok Sabha elections. According to the Election Commission (EC,) the Party needs approximately 12 MLAs to sustain the opposition status in the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana.
Telangana will contest a total of 17 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to be held on the 11th of April.
The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections are the INC, the TRS and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)
The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
