Umesh Jadhav, a former lawmaker of the Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 6th of March, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

Mr. Jadhav, on the 4th of March, submitted his resignation letter to Ramesh Kumar, the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, and resigned from the INC.

Speaking about the reasons, Umesh Jadhav was disappointed with the INC because of the dominant nature of Mallikarjun Kharge, a senior leader of the INC, and Priyank Kharge, a minister of the Kalaburagi region and Mallikarjun Kharge’s son.

Umesh Jadhav was also against the decision of giving a ministerial berth to Priyank, when there were other senior leaders appropriate for the post.

However, the INC denied the allegations and said, the Party sought the disqualification of Jadhav under the Anti Defection Law. According to the law, any political party can disqualify the elected members of the Party on the grounds of defection to an opposition political party.

The INC submitted a petition to Ramesh Kumar and sought the disqualification of four members, including Umesh Jadhav. The Party claimed, Umesh is a “betrayer” and sold himself to the BJP.

On the 6th of March, Umesh joined the BJP before the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a public rally in Kalaburagi, Karnataka.

PM Modi was in Karnataka to attend the public rally in Kalaburagi (also known as Gulbarga,) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The rally was the campaign strategy of the BJP to gain more voters in Karnataka.

B.S. Yeddyurappa, the BJP chief of Karnataka, welcomed Mr. Jadhav. Mr. Jadhav expressed his happiness and said, “I am happy and proud (of) joining BJP.”

It is expected, the BJP will give Umesh a ticket to contest the elections in Kalaburagi, against Mallikarjun Kharge.

Karnataka will contest a total of 28 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled between April and May 2019. The major parties contesting are the INC and the BJP.
