Dinesh Gundu Rao, the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC,) invited Rahul Gandhi, the President of the Indian National Congress (INC,) to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, on the 18th of March, officially invited Rahul Gandhi to contest and said, “Your candidature from Karnataka will not only boost the rank and file of our party in the entire state but also in South India. The ruling NDA is losing its shine and our alliance in the south is on a strong wicket.”

According to sources, previously, an ally of the KPCC was asked to contest in the Udupi Chikkamagaluru constituency. However, the Janata Dal (Secular) [JD(S)] refused to contest in that constituency, following which, the KPCC approached Rahul Gandhi.

Another reason to approach Mr. Gandhi was to avoid a quarrel and rifts between the two ally parties, as the KPCC is not happy with the JD(S.)

The INC sources said, “Party workers are not happy about the alliance with JD(S). If Rahul Gandhi is contesting from the state, it would give them the incentive to work together and ensure that the alliance is strong.”

Apart from the Karnataka wing of the INC, the INC in Tamil Nadu also asked Rahul Gandhi to contest in Tamil Nadu.

The approach might be a campaign strategy to ensure the victory of the INC against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) throughout the Country.

Karnataka will contest a total of 28 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which will be held in 2 phases. The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled on the 18th and 23rd of April.

The major parties contesting are the INC and the BJP.

The results of the elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
