The Communist Party of India (Marxist) led Left Front, on the 15th of March, decided the first list of 25 candidates contesting the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal.

According to the Party sources, the remaining 17 seats will be contested by candidates of the Indian National Congress (INC) or jointly by the members of both, the INC and the CPI (M.)

Though the list of the 25 candidates contesting the Lok Sabha elections is not yet final, the CPI (M) is adamant about contesting in the Purulia and Barasat constituencies. The Party said, they will not give these two seats to the INC, whereas regarding the other seats, both the Parties will have a discussion, following which, they will announce the final list.

Somendra Nath Mitra, the President of the West Bengal Congress Committee, said, “From our end, a seat sharing discussion is still on. What the Left Front has announced is not our lookout. This is not the final list.”

Biman Bose, the Chairman of the Left Front Congress, addressed a press conference and said, “In some seats, there could be candidates jointly supported by the Congress and the Left Front.”

The Parties discussed the seat sharing mathematics and agreed for a pre poll alliance, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal.

The CPI (M) will contest 15 seats, whereas the allies of the Left Front, such as the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB,) the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI,) will contest 3 seats each.

West Bengal will contest a total of 42 seats in the upcoming seven phased Lok Sabha elections.

The West Bengal elections are scheduled on the 11th of April, 18th of April, 23rd of April, 29th of April, 6th of May, 12th of May and 19th of May.

The major parties contesting the West Bengal Lok Sabha elections are the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) the INC and the Trinamool Congress (TMC.)

The results of the elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
