Shyama Charan Gupta, a lawmaker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) on the 15th of March, resigned from the BJP and joined an opposition party, the Samajwadi Party (SP,) in Uttar Pradesh.

The decision of Shyama Charan came hours before the BJP was to announce its first list of candidates in Uttar Pradesh. However, Gupta’s reason for resigning from the BJP is not yet confirmed.

Shyama Charan Gupta, the current Member of Parliament of the Prayagraj constituency, is expected to get a ticket for the Banda constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The decrease in the number of MPs would be a major setback for the BJP, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, whereas the grand alliance of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the (SP) will be benefited by Gupta’s move.

With the joining of Shyama Charan Gupta, the grand alliance of the BSP and the SP will have more chances to win in the Prayagraj constituency.
