Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party chief, on the 20th of January, reacted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘bachao bachao’ comment.

Mr. Gandhi took to Twitter and said, “Your Highness, The cries for help are the cries of millions of unemployed youth; of farmers in distress; of oppressed Dalits & Adivasis; of persecuted minorities; of small businessmen in ruin; begging to be freed from your tyranny & incompetence. In 100 days they will be free.”

The comment of Mr. Gandhi came after PM Modi, on the 19th of January, criticised the United India Rally organised by the Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress (TMC.)

PM Modi addressed a public rally in Silvassa, Gujarat and said, “A one-MLA party is giving them such sleepless nights that though it is only one MLA… they are shouting bachao bachao (save us, save us.)”

Mr. Modi also said, the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) between the opposition parties present at the rally is an alliance of negativity and corruption. Confident about his victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Modi said, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has the people’s power to win the elections, unlike the opposition parties, which have the power of money.

Omar Abdullah, a National Conference leader, also took a dig at PM Modi and said, “24 hours later the PM is still talking about #UnitedIndiaAtBrigade. Must say I’m surprised! I’d have thought he’d want people to forget the display of strength on @MamataOfficial didi’s part.”

In addition, Priyanka Chaturvedi, the spokesperson party of the Congress party, referred to the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a ‘thugbandhan.’

The United India Rally, held in Kolkata on the 18th of January, was a mega rally against the Bharatiya Janata Party. Approximately 23 opposition leaders from across India came together at the Brigade Parade Ground for the rally and criticised PM Modi and the BJP.

The rally is said to be a strategy to form an alliance against the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled between April and May 2019.
