Shiva Shankar, a voter, was arrested in the Rajendranagar constituency, Hyderabad, Telangana, today. He was caught taking a selfie while casting his vote inside the polling booth.

The accused, who is a resident of Upparpally, was taken into custody after a polling official reported the incident to the police.

According to the rules, using mobile phones inside the polling booths is prohibited. The action is an offence under the law and anyone violating the rule can be charged under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, for going against the rule of maintaining secrecy while voting.

The Election Commission (EC) asked the voters, especially the first time voters, to not use their mobile phones inside the polling stations.

The officials said, the voters are free to take selfies after coming out of the polling booths with their inked fingers.

The counting of the votes will be held on the 11th of December.
