Residents of Baraulia and Hariharpur, two villages in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, want a statue of late Manohar Parrikar, the former Chief Minister of Goa, in both the villages.

Manohar Parrikar, the Defence Minister of India and a Rajya Sabha member in Uttar Pradesh, passed away on the 17th of March. He was suffering from pancreatic cancer and died at his son’s residence in Panaji, Goa.

The residents of the two villages in Amethi are planning to approach Smriti Irani, a Union Minister of India, and Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, to fund the construction of the statue.

Surendra Pratap Singh, the former Gram Pradhan (Village Head) of Baraulia village, said, “If the statues can come up through Government help and funding, it would be nice. Else we will collect funds.”

The villagers shared a special relationship with Manohar Parrikar and want statues made of cement in both the villages, in memory of Mr. Parrikar’s good deeds and kindness towards the villagers.

Parrikar used to spend time with the residents of these villages and discuss strategies for the growth and development of these two villages. He often called the Gram Pradhan to Delhi and conducted a meeting to help the villages develop in every aspect.

He adopted Baraulia and Hariharpur and launched several development projects such as roads, solar lights, schools and skill development camps, etc., to contribute to the growth of the villages.

Rama Shankar Shastri, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker, spoke about late Manohar Parrikar and said, “I am a low key worker. I have never met a top politician who could be so down to earth, simple and caring. When I went to meet him, he even remembered that my hair had turned more grey since our previous meeting.”

The statues in Baraulia and Hariharpur, which the villagers want constructed in honor of Manohar Parrikar, are still works in the pipeline.

The Uttar Pradesh Government is yet to approve the construction of the statues and make an official announcement regarding the same.
