Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the 19th of February, landed in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and inaugurated the world’s first electric locomotive.

The Diesel Loco Works (DLW) converted a diesel engine into an electric locomotive, a part of the Make In India initiative.

The project, worth Rs. 3.79 crores, was sanctioned in 2017, to achieve 100 % electrified railways.

The DLW converted the locomotive to accomplish their goal of electrifying the railway networks.

Modi’s day’s schedule included launching several projects worth Rs. 3,382 crores and offering prayers at the Ravidas Temple in Varanasi.

Mr. Modi also laid the foundation for the Ravidas Birthplace Development Project in the City.

Mr. Modi addressed the public and said, “Sant Ravidas is the site of faith and reverence for crores of people. Guruji had conceived of India where everyone would be taken care of without any discrimination. Our Government has been doing the work of public welfare while furthering the same sentiment for the past four and a half years.”

Modi also launched the Madan Mohan Malviya Cancer Centre at the Banaras Hindu University. Later, he will also address a public rally in Varanasi, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled between April and May 2019 and the major parties contesting are the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)
