Assam Witnessed 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake, Jolt Felt In West Bengal Too

On the 28th of April, northeastern states and Assam registered a 6.4 magnitude earthquake.   

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said besides Assam, West Bengal, Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh and Bangladesh also felt the jolt of the earthquake on the night of the 28th of April. According to the NCS data after the first quake, 10 aftershocks of magnitude 2.9 to 4.7 on the Richter scale were recorded over around 5:40 P.M., in the vicinity of Sonitpur, Nagaon, Morigaon, Darrang, Kamrup Metro districts. The first earthquake with a depth of 17 km from the surface was around 7:51 A.M., on Thursday in Assam. With this, Assam witnessed 10 earthquakes on the 28th of April.

Even on Thursday, the 29th of April, earthquakes of magnitude 2.6, 2.9, 4.6, 2.7, and 2.3 on the Richter Scale had hit Sonitpur at 12.24 am, 1.10 am, 1.20 am, 1.41 am and 1.52 am respectively. In the early hours of the 29th of April, the State reported an earthquake of 2.7 magnitude in Sonitpur.

The natural calamity left 10 persons injured and many in panic. As per the disaster management officials in Guwahati, there are reports of damage to buildings, roads and some other infrastructure in different parts of Sonitpur, Tezpur, Nagaon, Morigaon and adjoining areas. The details were provided by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Assam Disaster Management Authority, G.D. Tripathi. However, no casualty has been reported yet

According to a report of the NCS, the epicentre is closer to the plate boundary and located at about 80 km northeast of Guwahati and 132 km north of Shillong.

Soon after hearing the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and DoNER (Development of North Eastern Region) Minister Jitendra Singh spoke to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and assured all possible help.

After speaking over phone with Mr. Sonowal twice, PM Modi took to Twitter and said, “Spoke to Assam CM Shri Sarbananda Sonowal Ji regarding the earthquake in parts of the state. Assured all possible help from the Centre. I pray for the well-being of the people of Assam.”

Meanwhile, the opposition Indian National Congress (INC) leader Rahul Gandhi, also stood in solidarity with the people of Assam. He asked asked the INC leaders in Assam to be at the forefront of rescue and relief efforts.

The rescue operation and other measures to handle the situation is underway in Assam and its region.
