The Supreme Court (SC,) on the 18th of July, reviewed the reports about the mediation process of the long standing Ayodhya dispute case.

The Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi case is a long standing dispute between the Hindu and the Muslim community for a piece of land in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

The Babri Masjid was broken down by a few Hindu extremists, who believed Ram was born in the same spot where the Masjid was built. Now, both the Hindus and the Muslims are trying to reclaim that same piece of land.

The Ayodhya case is not only a religious matter, but also a political one. This is because the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) promised to build the Ram temple as one of the promises in their manifesto.

The majority of votes the BJP received in Uttar Pradesh were due to the promise of the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

After reviewing the reports, a bench of five judges, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, ordered the constituted mediation panel to submit a complete report about the mediation process by the 1st of August.

The SC also said the next hearing of the Ayodhya case will be on the 2nd of August in an open court.

The panel has time till the 31st of July to conduct the mediation process and make a decision about the same. The 3 members panel includes spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, retired Justice F.M. Kalifulla and senior advocate Sriram Panchu.

The SC, on the 8th of March, constituted the panel and asked for the report to be submitted with a solution, within 4 weeks from the 8th of March. However, nothing happened after that till today.

Ranjan Gogoi said, “We now fix the date of hearing on August 2. We request the mediation committee to inform the outcome of the proceedings as of July 31.”

The next hearing is scheduled to be held on the 2nd of August.

Stay tuned for further updates.
