A young Bangladeshi girl was sold to a brothel in Mumbai but managed to make a riveting escape. With courage and a bit of luck, the 21 year old girl managed to escape the hell hole.
In Bangladesh, the girl lived with her family and one of her relatives told her about an agent in Mumbai who could get her a job. The girl was thrilled and excited to get a well paying job and boarded a ship to Kolkata. She then took a train to Mumbai and reached the city on the 23rd of January.
A source from the police reported, “The agent met her and told her he had found her a job as a security guard. Instead, he took her straight to a brothel at Grant Road.” The girl then understood what happened and resisted the men at the brothel. They locked her up and tortured her for five days in hopes of breaking her spirit. But the girl refused to give up and decided to make a break for freedom.
Late in the night of the 27th of January once everyone was asleep the girl broke a window. She then climbed down the drainpipe and ran towards the main road. The scared young girl stopped a cab driver who luckily understood her language, Bengali. She narrated her awful story to the driver who took her to DB Marg Police Station.
An officer stated, “When the girl came to the police station, we listened to her story and lodged an FIR against the culprits under Sections 370 (trafficking), 343 (wrongful confinement for three or more days), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Sections 3,5,6,7,8 of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act.”
The police raided the brothel but by then the place was abandoned. The girl also explained the agent took her passport when she reached Mumbai. She also told them about the many girls who were trapped with the brothel owners. The police have taken the courageous girl to a rehabilitation center and a search operation is on to find the accused.
