BJP Declines To Stake Claim In Puducherry After INC Loses Floor Test

On the 22nd of February, the Puducherry Political crisis witnessed a result of the collapsed government of the Indian National Congress (INC.)

V. Narayanasamy, the Chief Minister of Puducherry, lost in the floor test today.

After losing the floor test, Mr. Narayanasamy blamed the opposition and former Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi for the collapsed INC Government. He also submitted his resignation as the Chief Minister of Puducherry to the newly appointed Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan.

The INC was in the minority after senior INC leaders resigned from the Party, decreasing the Members of the Legislative Assembly number to 12. The majority mark for forming Government in Puducherry is 16.

After the collapsed government of the INC, in Puducherry, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the strongest opposition Party, which could stake a claim and form the Government.

However, V. Saminathan, the President of the BJP in Puducherry declined to stake claims.

On the 22nd of February Mr. Swaminathan said “We will not try and form a Government at this stage. With the people’s blessings in the forthcoming elections and [Prime Minister Narendra] Modiji’s leadership, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form a government with BJP and its alliance partners All India NR Congress and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in May and build a new bright future for the people of Puducherry(sic.)”

Confident about the BJP winning in the upcoming Puducherry Assembly elections, Mr. Swaminathan said, “A culture of corruption and exploitation is the only thing that Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have given to the people instead of development and helping them. The people of Puducherry will teach them a lesson in the coming elections.”

In addition, amid the recent political turmoil and floor test, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India is scheduled to visit the poll bound Union Territory. His visit is scheduled on the 25th of February.

As of now, the Union Territory is currently without any governance and could likely impose the President’s rule.

Stay tuned for further updates.
